Corrective ear surgery (also known as Otoplasty) is used to address often congenital (present at birth) differences in ear size, appearance, or position that patients often find bothersome. Ear trauma or deformities from ear piercing can also be corrected. Surgery can offer a permanent correction to ear irregularities. The most common corrective surgery is for ear pinning overly prominent ears and otoplasty to help correct the ear shape.

How is otoplasty performed?
The procedure performed depends on the need for the correction, and often can be conducted under minimal sedation with local anesthesia. The procedure time can take 1 to 2 hours. Scars are often hidden behind the ear. For correction of protuberant or too large appearing ears, typically the incision is made behind the ear and the excess cartilage is removed or sculpted, and the ears are repositioned closer to the head. Sutures are placed internally to correct the ear position. Additional sutures are placed behind the ear to close the incision. A light dressing is applied. Patients can return home and light activity after the procedure.

Patients commonly experience discomfort, swelling, and bruising. Patients typically can return to work after 1 week. Younger children will need to avoid heavy play for 2 weeks. Swelling may take several months to completely resolve.
