How Safe Are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peel

What do you think of when you hear ‘chemicals’? Is it a mad scientist cackling away while mixing odd-colored liquids to the lightning backdrop like a modern-day witch? Does hearing the word have you reaching for a hazmat suit? If you answered ‘yes,’ first: Why do you have a hazmat suit? And second, though it sounds scary, chemicals aren’t as sinister as you think.

Did you know that water is technically a chemical? You need certain chemicals to live, which can help you live better. Chemical peels are an excellent, low-risk way of exfoliating and obtaining rejuvenated skin.

Learn what chemical peels are, why they’re safe, and how you can benefit from them in getting younger-looking, healthier skin.

What Are Chemical Peels Made Of?

A quick point of note before delving into the ingredients of chemical peels: they have three different levels. These superficial, medium, and deep levels correspond to the skin level the peel penetrates towards. A greater penetration typically means a greater effect.

Chemical peels are typically made up of weak acids. Still, much like the word ‘chemical’ shouldn’t be cause for concern, ‘acid’ too doesn’t need to be scary (for example, vitamin C’s chemical name is ascorbic acid!).

The acids that typically make up chemical peels are glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, and salicylic acid. In the case of deep peels, chemicals known as phenols are used. These acids exfoliate the skin and encourage a healing cascade within the skin, increasing crucial proteins like collagen and elastin.

Your provider may use different acids at different concentrations depending on the intended goal. Make sure you speak with them to understand the outcome of your peel.

Are Chemical Peels Safe?

Aside from the common risks associated with cosmetic procedures, chemical peels are generally safe. Expected side effects are redness and mild irritation immediately after your chemical peel, but these are expected to go away independently with time.

In some rare instances, you can be subject to discoloration, scarring, or even infection.

Safety and risks depend on the level of chemical peel you get, with deep chemical peels having the greatest risks.

To understand the risks and benefits of chemical peels, make sure you speak with your provider.
