How to keep your breasts perkier, longer!
- Posted on: Aug 15 2021
When women think of what makes their breasts look youthful and attractive, they often mention either size or “perkiness.” A lot of physical, and hormonal, changes occur during a woman’s lifetime, and many of these can impact the breasts. This includes pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, significant weight loss, and even menopause. Many women who visit with Dr. Kimberly Carpin of Webster, TX will often comment on being dissatisfied with the appearance of their breasts, especially when aging and body changes contribute to a sagging or deflated look.
Why do our breasts sag with time?
The breasts include connective tissue, glandular tissue, and fat. The connective tissue is responsible for the shape and “perkiness” of the breasts. The “suspensory ligaments of cooper” are a component of the connective tissue that holds the breast tissues and lifts the breasts. However, with time, these ligaments are stretched and result in the loss of fullness and lift. The only way to effectively address the lift, volume, and firmness of the breasts is with a breast lift combined with breast augmentation (breast implants).
There are a few ways in which women can reduce the changes in the breasts that contribute to sagging, though sagging that has already occurred can only be resolved with plastic surgery.
Below are a few recommendations for younger women to consider to delay changes in the lift and volume of the breasts:
- Maintain a healthy skincare routine to keep the skin in the cleavage area tighter
- Wear comfortable and supportive bras to reduce stretching and weaking of the ligaments
- Exercise regularly to maintain a healthy weight, tighten chest muscles, and improve posture
- Maintain a healthy weight to avoid weight fluctuations, and avoid yo-yo dieting
- Quit smoking or chewing tobacco
- Stay hydrated to prevent the early signs of aging and skin laxity
