Like Botox, Dysport is a “neuromodulator” made of Botulinum toxin. With normal facial expressions such as frowning and smiling, wrinkles eventually develop, making you appear older or more tired than you actually are. A few simple injections are all it takes for Dysport® to block the nerve signals to the muscles that cause the wrinkles to appear. This results in a temporary reduction in muscle activity, preventing lines and wrinkles from forming when you make certain facial expressions.
Dysport is most commonly injected at a few points between the eyebrows, on the forehead, and on the sides of the eyes. The untreated facial muscles still contract normally, allowing you to maintain normal facial expressions.
Dysport® and Botox are very similar products and are in the same category of medications called neuromodulators. Both contain Botulinum toxin A and work in a similar manner to relax the muscles responsible for the formation of wrinkles. Dysport was approved for use in the U.S. in 2009, while Botox has been around much longer and is more widely known. Many patients and injectors find that results can be seen 1 to 2 days EARLIER with Dysport than with Botox. Another difference is that the dosage or number of units used will be different. Also, Dysport tends to spread more, allowing it to treat more areas with fewer injections. Unless you have a specific preference, we will help you determine which product is best suited to your aesthetic goals.
Side effects of Dysport® are rare and are usually mild and temporary. The most common side effects are headaches, temporary redness, or bruising of the skin at the site of injection. In rare cases, slight drooping of an eyelid or asymmetry of expression may occur temporarily. The risks of complications can be reduced by choosing a qualified and experienced injector like ours.
